How to Keep Your Child Moving Over Summer (Even Without Class)
Summer break is a time to relax, but for many parents, it’s also when concerns about too much screen time start to creep in. Without the structure of school or regular activities, it can be tough to keep kids moving, especially when the couch (and tablet!) are just a few steps away.
At Academy 831, we know how powerful movement is—not just for physical health, but for confidence, focus, and emotional well-being. Even if your child isn’t enrolled in summer classes this year, there are still plenty of simple, fun ways to keep them active and engaged at home!
Here are some of our favorite dance-inspired activities to try this summer:
1. Create a 10-Minute Dance Break Routine
Set aside 10 minutes a day (before lunch or after dinner) for a family dance break. Let your child choose their favorite song and freestyle, or create a simple routine together. It doesn’t need to be perfect—just moving to the music builds coordination, stamina, and creativity.
Pro Tip: Record your daily dance and do a “dance countdown” till school starts!
2. Turn Chores into a Dance Game
Need to clean up the toys or set the table? Add music and turn it into a challenge: “Can we pick up everything before the chorus ends?” It’s a sneaky way to get the body moving while teaching responsibility.
Bonus: Let your child be the DJ and pick the clean-up playlist!
3. Try a Home Dance Challenge
Choreograph a short routine (8-counts or less) and challenge family members to learn it. Your child will love being the teacher, and they’ll build memory and leadership skills along the way.
Want inspiration? Look up beginner combos on YouTube or remix a few favorite recital moves!
4. Make an Obstacle Course with a Dance Twist
Set up stations around the living room or backyard: jumping jacks, grapevines, spins, or high knees. Time your child as they go through the “course” and challenge them to beat their score. Great for building stamina and focus!
5. Add Movement to Story Time
Younger dancers? Read a storybook and turn it into a mini movement session. For example, hop like a frog, twirl like a princess, or tiptoe like a mouse as you go through each page. It’s silly, it’s fun, and it keeps little bodies moving and imaginations flowing.
Dance isn’t just about technique—it’s about expression, joy, and movement. Even without formal classes, giving your child a chance to dance through summer helps them stay connected to those benefits (and gives their brains a healthy break from screens!).
